New York & North Carolina

New York

After 0 sleep me and my mum missed our second flight to New York from Chicago. The crossover gave us 0 time, our flight was delayed and by the time our luggage came out to collect the flight had already left half an hour ago. We were so anxious. When we finally got to the American Airlines help desk we were sweating like lil bitches. Thankfully the guy was super nice and issued us tickets to the next flight but told us to RUN.

Our first couple of days in New York were awesome. My cousin Yin and her boyfriend Griffin had planned our first day showing us sites, prominent shopping places and the usual touristic locations. It took all the pressure off me and Sarah and we had such a bomb. We visited Central Park, Saks, Tiffany’s as well as the Rockafella Christmas Tree. They also took us to some NYC pizza joints drools and I ate a fried chicken wrapped in a waffle with maple syrup poured all over it double drool

Yin also took us to the original Meatpacking district which I had been to in Copenhagen this one was too awesome. It was very rustic and industrial which were both of my favourite aesthetics and felt a bit like London Bridge + Bermondsay + Commercial/ Liverpool Street area in one but 10x bigger!

That night my auntie took us to a Chinese Seafood restaurant but we were SOOOOOO full. The food was too good so we got F’d up bloated whilst the Chinese restaurant played a huge selection of Trap Music LOL.

For actual Christmas day believe it or not but all the Chinese restaurants all over NY were open because Chinese people don’t really celebrate it. So we had greasy DIm Sum for brekkie . It was fab but I was already F’d up and hungover from the Christmas Eve meal… and then later that day we went to some Chinese restaurant AGAIN for Seafood lmao by now I had about 5 zits pop up, an allergic skin reaction on my face from the meat/Chinese food and an upset stomach which meant I’m most likely intolerant to Chinese food. Nevertheless it was soooo tasty I couldn’t help myself and had to eat/try everything which worsened my stomach condition. #WORTH

The next day Yin came and met up with us again and showed us around Brushwick which was super trend, a lot of graffiti and independant shops; really similar to Hackney. Sarah bought her weightx100  in random items again. That night my auntie had booked the Rockafella Christmas show…. it was entertaining. The most American OTT production you could ever thought possible. They threw every trick into the hat including a 3D film where you fly around with Santa delivering presents. Then to top it off on trotted some farm animals lol… 3 camels, 10 sheep and a donkey to be precise. All on stage in a Nativity set 😐

The next day me and Sarah decided to go to the Met Museum which was rammo. It was raining and soooo cold (about -10.C) when we were outside we had to run to take cover in the nearest opening. Luckily what we found was a secret ground floor entrance to the Museum cutting the entire 3 hour long looking queue outside. SUCCESS. I went around and checked out the David Hockney exhib and some other Modern Art/Photography sections which were really cool. The Photogrpahy&Fine art section was related to art done at war. It had loads of linograph prints and illustrations I wish I had taken my sketch book 🙁

After the Met we went to meet up with Yin for crazy dinner at David Chang’s Momofuku. Sarah was too hyped and ordered a $50 mushroom ramen and then we went and had a couple of drinks. Yin took us to a couple of dive bars and we met up with with some of her friends, got hammered and played darts and some sort of bowling game.

North Carolina

North Carolina was actually mental. The drive took over 8 hours to get there from New York and there was a huge bridge that went from one side of the Ocean to the other – mental!

I was terrified when I got there as we were staying in an absolutely beautiful BUT humungous house of about 20 strangers who have grown up/known eachother for 10s of years. The people were absolutely lovely and fed and watered us daily. The ‘kids’ who were around our age 23-30yr olds were really smart and also into their board games and card games so we spent 3 days drinking and competing against each other. I was practically drunk every single night. They had loads of mini traditions and one of them was watching Love Actually and we’d have to drink every time they said Love, Actually or played music, or there was a sad moment, which was basically ALL the time. So naturally we all got hammered and went to sleep at 4am.

The location was incredible. We explored a little as soon as got there.  We were all staying in 1 room; there were 2 double bunk beds and a mattress on the floor to squash in me and Sarah. This was on the ground floor which was the basement which had a pool table, out door pool and jacuzzi and gate to their own private decking bridge onto the most beautiful and empty beach!!!!! It was some sort of paradise we got too hyped and couldn’t believe it!!!!!

Over the days I painted, read my book, helped prepare dinner, chilled, ate, played board games chatted, drank, watched films and shopped. It felt like a dream.

On NYE we played Charades which I am terrified of as I hate public speaking especially in front of people I don’t know so I downed 4 glasses of Champagne and got drunk and did my best. I had an absolute blast!

SO yeah I drank & ate so much I fell asleep on Debbie who was the girlfriend of Steve’s dad. My cousin had to drag me to bed and I missed the acoustic and singing session 🙁 At 3am Sarah came and shook me awake and I went outside to continue playing Slap Cup  which btw EVERYONE has to play.

When we got back it was time to pack, sleep as we were leaving early the next morning. The entire trip was mental we didn’t have to plan anything which was a change usually I have to plan the whole thing and it gets really tiring.  There was barely any stress and we were driven, fed and watered every day. I had such a good time I will defo go back in the Summer next time!!! So I can explore New York more. I really wanted to see more of Williamsburg and Bushwick. My cousin Yin really did make so much effort to show us around, make us feel comfortable, feed us, guide us and take us to North Carolina with her. It was so nice of her and it was lovely to see my family who I barely see even though I kept moaning every day because of my intolerance to the poor diet there. Thanks to them we had an awesome time they made it one to remember!
